historical collections and resources. Please help us with
          this community task.

Lanai Culture & Heritage Center Mission and Vision

The Lanai Culture & Heritage Center seeks to inspire people to be informed, thoughtful and active stewards of Lanai's heritage by preserving, interpreting and celebrating Lanai's natural history, Hawaiian traditions, diverse heritage and cultures, and ranching and plantation era histories.

About the Lanai Culture & Heritage Center

The Lanai Culture & Heritage Center is the beneficiary of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) entered into in 1987 by five parties; Lanaians for Sensible Growth; the Office of Hawaiian Affairs; the State Department of Land and Natural Resources; Hui Malama Pono o Lanai (a native Hawaiian Organization on Lanai) and Castle & Cooke, Resorts LLC. The purpose of the MOA was to address community concerns for the care of the unique cultural and natural resources of Lanai. The importance of this mission has become even more important with the passing of time.

The land changes, our elders pass away, and new generations lose touch with their heritage and the hard work of their elders.

The Lanai Culture & Heritage Center is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit charitable organization. Following lengthy discussion and planning in the community, the Lanai Culture & Heritage Center formally opened its doors on October 1, 2007. Between October 1, 2007 to December 31, 2009, the Lanai Culture & Heritage Center was situated in a 600 square foot office, from which the history and resources of Lanai were shared with 11,738 people.

During that time Trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, numerous other organizations and donors (including Castle & Cooke Resorts, LLC), and island residents contributed significant funding to the program, including the major capital improvements program of the Lanai Culture & Heritage Center.

On January 16, 2010, the Lanai Culture & Heritage Center opened the doors of its new archival-display facility, situated in the heart of the former Dole Plantation Administration Building. Between January 2010 and December 31, 2011, 17,974 people participated in Lanai Culture & Heritage Center programs, with indoor and field programs. Funding from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and the Agape Foundation also facilitated the development of a stewardship program, helping residents and visitors engage in work to stabilize and protect some of Lanai's treasured cultural-historical resources.

The Lanai Culture & Heritage Center has established a model community heritage program that other communities have expressed interest in creating in their own communities. We need your help to ensure that the history of our island home will will be passed on, and that new generations of "heritage stewards" will be prepared to assume responsibility for their island legacy.

Please consider supporting the Lanai Culture & Heritage Center funding and endowment drive. Donations large and small are gratefully appreciated and donations qualify as a tax deduction to a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization.
