Lanai Culture & Heritage Center Community Heritage Stewardship Photos

The slide shows below document progress in the Lanai Community Heritage Stewardship program of 2010-2011. This work is being done by a group of community volunteers with the Lanai Culture & Heritage Center, and the daily guidance of Kaulana Kahoohalahala and Randy Mosher. The photos show an amazing transformation of Ka Lanakila Church (built in 1903), the Maunalei Sugar Company Mill Site (built in 1899), and other features along the Keomoku coast of Lanai.

Mahalo nui to the dedicated crew,  Office of Hawaiian Affairs and the Agape Foundation for their generous donation supporting stewardship programs and giving residents opportunities to do meaningful work. Right-of-Entry Agreements were granted by Castle & Cooke so that this work could be undertaken.

Documenting Sites
Around Lanai

Lanai is home to countless traditional cultural sites and historic properties. The good “eye” of Lanai born, Warren Osako, was drawn to an adze quarry and workshop site in the Palawai Basin, which is being impacted by trail development and erosion. Warren, a dedicated Lanai CHC volunteer, is documenting the site so that knowledge of the place will not be lost.

Help us care for the land and Lanai's cultural resources. Please respect traditional sites and our island landscape.
