By the close of day, a draft of the mele had been composed, with thoughts and experiences of the students put into English, and that translated into Hawaiian.

Waiaʻōpae i ke kai nehe:
The sound of waves crashing resembles the sound of kiawe rustling
Toiling in the sweltering heat
Unity and laughter in handing rocks to each other
Working on the fishpond feeling the mana of our kūpuna

Kani ka leo o ka nalu, me ka nakeke o ka ulu kiawe
He nui ka hana i ka lā welawela
Lokahi ka leo i ka ‘aka‘aka, a laulima i ka hāpai Pōhaku
He mana nō i ke kūkulu hou ‘ana a ka loko i‘a a nā kūpuna

The day was spent at the LHES Classroom with students composing their thoughts for personal presentations—including their documenting personal experiences, assessment of topics and cultural/natural resource management needs, recommendations for future management of resources—creative writing (development of mele), and creation of their program mural under the guidance of Jesse Del Rosario, Ben Ostrander and Kaleo Ropa.

Holo waʻa ma Mānele me Hulopo‘e:
The waʻa glides along the ocean
Wind brushing against our cheeks as we stare out at the horizon
We sense our kūpuna gazing at us, showing us the way
Remember the great travels and sacrifices of our kūpuna

Kīkaha ka wa‘a Mo‘okiha o Pi‘ilani ma ke kai o Ke-ala-i-Kahiki
Aheahe ka makani ma ka papalina, ke nānā no i ka hālāwai
Hālō mai na kūpuna, i alaka‘i no kākou
E ho‘omana‘o i nā huaka‘i holokai a me ka hana nui a nā kūpuna…

Maunalei i ka wai ola:
Kūpuna as our roots/foundation
Walking the ʻauwai, planting/harvesting the kalo
The sound of water flowing through the loʻi
Hāloa, our older brother—if we take care of him, he will take care of us

O nā kūpuna no ko mākou kumupa‘a
Hehi ‘ana ma ka lihi ‘auwai a e kanu i ke kalo
Ka ‘owē o ka wai i ka lo‘i kalo
O Hāloa ko kākou kaiku‘ana—e mālama iāia a e mālama iā kākou
