In the lower regions, students visited an area of old koa tree growth, and visited sites along the way at Ku‘ia, the Naha and Pu‘u Manu trail intersection, and Kani‘ua‘u.

The students learned first-hand about the impacts of uncontrolled grazing, deforestation, and erosion, and observed differences between the windward and leeward regions of the watershed. Much needed rains made travel to the summits of Lāna’i Hale and Ha’alele Pa‘akai impossible so the trip was cut short.
